Advancing Education: Developing A Cutting-Edge App to Enable Online Tutoring for Competitive Exams

Met Veranda’s Expectations to Facilitate Online Teaching Through Mobile App Development

The Veranda was just an educational institution some time ago. Of late, they decided to take their business online and impart online teaching to candidates preparing for competitive exams. That’s when they reached out to Binmile for feature-rich mobile app development. Since they already had a web app, we improved the existing application for uninterrupted remote teaching. Post that, we also created a mobile application named Yukti TNPSC (Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission) along with four other apps named Yukti SSC (Staff Selection Commission), Yukti UPSC(Union Public Service Commission), Yukti Banking, and Yukti Sreedhar CCE Banking, all of them can be found on Google Play Store. Out of all, Yukti TNPSC is the main app, while the rest are clones with different content and materials.

One important thing to note here is that our developers created Veranda’s application from scratch but the hub of their backend and APIs belongs to Edureka. In short, the admin system of Veranda is merged with Edureka, which both brands use simultaneously. Binmile developers also ensured that whatever courses are created in the admin, they should appear in both apps, be it a mobile app or a web app, so that students can access them as per their convenience.

Developed Multiple Features For Veranda to Enhance Student’s Learning Experience

First of all, we created a section called Menu within Courses which displays all the courses that Veranda offers. Then, we created another section called My Courses, which is mainly focused on individual purchases. Whatever courses a student will pay for, those courses will be shown in the My Courses section. The number of courses that a student completes from Veranda can be tracked through the My Courses section. Veranda had two main portals, i.e., Admin and LMS (Learning Management System). We added some key features to both portals to run the Veranda application perfectly. For example, we added course creation and question parser features to the Admin panel. On the other hand, we integrated unit & module creation, question bank panel, and story & carousel features into the LMS panel. In the story section, Veranda can share images and videos (up to 1 minute) about different courses for promotion and advertising purposes. In this section, Veranda can upload 10 stories at a time for the desired duration by leveraging customization options.

Introduced the Black Box Feature in Veranda’s App for Individual Assessment Purposes

The next functionality that Binmile developers added to Veranda’s application is the Black Box. This feature is only available for scholars who have opted for the subscription plan. It is mainly used for individual assessment purposes, such as the total questions attempted, not attempted, answered incorrectly, and most importantly, requires reattempt by the candidate. Also, their subscription model consists of three patterns, i.e., Silver, Gold, and Platinum. And when it comes to the courses, they are categorized as Free, Freemium, and Paid. Here, the user has both choices, they can buy the course individually or go with the subscription plan. If the user buys any of the subscription plans mentioned above, then the courses that are freemium and paid will unlock all the units for the user. In the case of a Free plan, one can access courses that don’t require any payment. In the case of a Freemium plan, the first unit will be free, and for the next one users will have to pay. Lastly, in the Paid plan, the first unit will be locked. Students can access those courses only when they pay for them.

Built a Leaderboard for Veranda to Encourage Learning for Students

Integrated Functionalities Like Goal Tracker to Motivate Veranda’s Students to Study More

Coming to the next part, a bunch of seasoned developers at Binmile also created and integrated a leaderboard into Veranda’s application. The leaderboard is a place where all the people who are preparing for the TNPSC or some other exam are updated. It is free and comes with certain modules, such as Videos, PDFs, and QAs. Students who watch a video of any length, read a couple of PDFs, or learn dozens of QAs related to a specific chapter are counted and the leaderboard is generated based on that. If a candidate is in the first 5 ranks, then the leaderboard will show the first 5 positions. But if a candidate is not in the first 5 ranks, then their rank will be shown in the 6th row. Goal Tracker is another feature that has been developed by the Binmile team to encourage students to achieve their competitive exam goals in a systematic manner. It comes with three subscription plans, i.e., Silver, Gold, and Platinum. No matter which plan one takes, all the features will be the same, only the difference will be in time. For example, the Silver plan is valid for 90 days, Gold for 180 days, and Platinum for 360 days, and the pricing of each plan is different too.

The admin of the application has a separate control panel for course creation that contains Goal Tracker, Quiz only, Mix, Live, and Star Faculty. If a user clicks on Mix, then they can access some PDF files, images, and videos. But when they click on Goal Tracker, it will open a new window that will contain two sections: All Goals and My Goals (by default). In the All Goals section, all the courses will appear, while in the My Goals section, only the courses started by the user from the All Goals section will appear. Also, when working on Goal Tracker, a streak is created, which is a part of a Streak Building Feature. In case a scholar has tasks for 15 days and he completes the same seamlessly, then a streak will appear else that it will break.

Performed Veranda’s App Testing to Deliver An Excellent User Experience

Talking about the testing part, Binmile testers examined the whole mobile application of Veranda including the Login, Authentication, and Profile sections. First up, one needs to enter his mobile number, then he will get an OTP. Post entering the OTP, they can authenticate themselves and enter the application. After that, students have to create a profile and fill in all the necessary details, such as name, phone number, course, etc., because after that only their dashboard will be created.

The next functionality we checked was the Multi-language model. In this model, when an admin creates a course, he has to create it in both English and Tamil. This way, assume a candidate has selected Tamil as his preferred language. In that case, the app will display in Tamil language after closing the existing session and starting it again without logging out of the app. By default, the course language is English.

Tested Notification Feature of Veranda’s App to Send Timely Alerts

Finally, we tested the Ask A Doubt feature of the Veranda application, where students can ask a doubt from the vendor related to any exam assessment or chapter they are going through. Once the question is raised by the scholar, the answer will be received in the next few minutes to a few hours. It is a one-to-one communication system. On the other hand, when it comes to Support services, scholars can include multiple messages in one message because that works like threads. A person can avail Support services if he comes across any application-related issue or something similar. Since our developers have also incorporated Notification features into Support services, the students will get Push notifications and In-app notifications whenever any alert is sent. A user will get notifications in multiple cases, such as when he purchases any course or subscription plan, when a new course is updated in the admin, or when he changes notification language from English to Tamil.
